Organization and Structure

The Practicum/Field experiences course programme forms an integral and compulsory part of undergraduate student education in the School. It is composed of and supervised by the Practicum Committee, which is under the management of the Pedagogy Department Director and comprises members of the Pedagogy Department as well as representatives from the other three Departments. Organizational issues are dealt with by a separate Secretariat. Practicum courses take place on specific days or weeks of the academic year during which all other classes are suspended so that students’ attendance is not inhibited. The schedule for is determined by the Practicum Committee and signed by the G.A. (General Assembly) of the Department.

 According to the Previous Study Programme, it starts in semester 3(3rd) and is completed in semester 8(8th), including three interrelated phases, which are implemented in the following way:

  • 3rd semester: 4 course credits (6 ECTS) – Phase A
  • 4th semester: 4 course credits Phase A: 4 course credits (6 ECTS) – Phase A
  • 5th semester: 8 course credits (8ECTS) – Phase B
  • 6th semester: 6 course credits (8ECTS) - Phase B
  • 7th semester: 8 course credits Phase B: 8 course credits (8ECTS) - Phase B
  • 8th semester: 10 course credits Phase C: 10 course credits (18 ECTS) – Phase C

Total: 40 course credits (54 ECTS)

For more information regarding the course content of the programme, students can consult the Student’s Guide under the headings: Phase A (“Applied Pedagogy I, II”) , Phase B (“Applied Pedagogy III, IV, V”) and Phase C  (“Applied Pedagogy VI”), semesters 3 (3rd), 4 (4th), 5 (5th), respectively.

Implementation of the Programme

  • On entering study semester 3 (3rd) students receive a “Practicum Booklet” and are required to have it updated by the coordinators as far as Practicum progress is concerned.
  • Student attendance in guidance group meetings, preparation process, collaborating with preschool teachers seconded by the education authorities and in kindergarten classes is compulsory. Consequently, students are asked to read any announcements posted by the Practicum Secretariat for timely registration and fulfillment of all requirements.
  • All Practicum phases correspond to Laboratory Research courses. In this respect:
  1. Students are entitled to participate in the next Practicum phase only if they have completed the previous one.
  2. There is no re-sit examination in September. Students, who have not met the specified Practicum requirements, are asked to repeat the specific phase during the study semester in which it is offered.

Practicum/Field experiences programme in the Department of Psychology and Special Education

The Practicum/Field experiences programme in Special Education starts at the 6th study semester and is implemented additionally to that of the general Practicum course programme. The objective is to provide students from the Department of Psychology and Special Education with practical training in various special education and inclusion structures. In particular, during the 6th study semester, students visit special education settings (special kindergarten classrooms, institutions with a variety of disabilities) for one (1) week, then ,during the 7th study semester students remain for one (1) week  ( additionally to that of the general Practicum course) to the inclusion classrooms and, finally, during the 8th study semester the Practicum course in Special education is implemented in the inclusion classrooms that have already been selected by the students in the previous semester and lasts for a period of (20) days.
